Rug Maintenance and Cleaning Tips
Regular Maintenance: Some rugs require special care, so it’s important to check the instructions tag before you start cleaning your area rug. If the tag contains special instructions, follow those! In general wool, silk, and cotton rugs require professional cleaning and care. For synthetic fiber rugs, here’s our advice:
- For Smaller Rugs: take them outdoors as needed and give them a good shake to remove any larger dirt particles or dust.
- Vacuum Your Rug: regularly vacuum rugs on a low setting and be careful not to get too close to the edges or fringe. The beater bar of your vacuum can damage your rug if it gets sucked up into the machine.
- Turning Your Rugs Once A Year: turning your rugs yearly helps to evenly distribute the wear from foot traffic, especially if the rug is exposed to direct sunlight which can cause sun fading.
Deep Cleaning: If your rug has stains or gives off an odor, it’s time for a deep cleaning. For wool, cotton and silk rugs it’s best to hire a professional cleaner. We recommend Spots Carpet Care for your rug cleaning needs as they are Master Certified and certified by the IICRC. If you’d like to DIY, check with the manufacturer recommendations before cleaning your area rug.
